Launching a doula business as a new mom
Jessica Levasseur was new to motherhood when she decided to also transition into doula work. She reflects on her journey to here and her reason for starting her doula business in Cornwall, Ontario.
When I found out I was pregnant with my first child, it unleashed a whirlwind of emotions. Excitement mingled with anxiety. As my pregnancy progressed, I transitioned from a state of anxiety to one of eager anticipation, particularly as I prepared for a planned home birth. This transformation altered my entire outlook on childbirth and parenthood.
My introduction to the concept of a doula came through a friend's recommendation, and after some research, I realized the invaluable support they provide during childbirth. I knew I needed someone knowledgeable about birth, capable of guiding us through the process while offering unwavering support to both me and my husband.
When I was six months pregnant, I felt a strong desire to become a doula. Despite the isolation of those times, I was motivated to learn everything I could about pregnancy, birth, and postpartum care. I believed this information should be available to all families, and I was committed to helping by educating and advocating for them.
It was towards the end of my pregnancy that I met with Michelle and Stef from By The Moon on one of their info session nights. Their program resonated with me immediately, and without hesitation, I enrolled in their Full Spectrum Doula Training program. Balancing motherhood with my new passion, I started doula training while caring for my two-month-old baby.
Running a business wasn't new to me. I had already started dabbling in entrepreneurship, but nothing like starting a doula business. Moving from my own private work to starting my doula business was challenging. I began by using social media and joining vendor markets to spread the word about my services. Stepping out of my comfort zone, I networked with other entrepreneurs and found my first clients at one of these events.
Despite the challenges, I seized opportunities to grow my business, including participating in a local business program and pitching for grants. Though I wasn't selected as a grant recipient, the experience was invaluable, gaining knowledge and insights that proved instrumental in my entrepreneurial journey.
Balancing entrepreneurship with motherhood brought its share of challenges. However, I found strategies to manage, relying on a strong support network to handle on-call duties while prioritizing my family. This balance gave me the flexibility to be as busy as needed for work while ensuring I could be present for my family whenever and wherever necessary.
Over the past two years, my doula business has evolved beyond its initial scope. Expanding my skill set with certifications in reflexology and reiki through By The Moon, I've had the privilege of supporting individuals through their pregnancy, birth, and postpartum journeys in deep and meaningful ways.
Being a full-time entrepreneur is a decision I've never regretted. It's a journey filled with growth, fulfillment, and the profound privilege of supporting families during one of life's most transformative experiences.
As I reflect on my journey of entrepreneurship, I'm reminded of the resilience and determination that have carried me through challenges and moments of uncertainty. Becoming a doula and entrepreneur has not only allowed me to pursue my passion for supporting families but has also empowered me to grow personally and professionally. Each step of this journey has been filled with invaluable lessons and opportunities for growth. Looking ahead, especially as we prepare our newest arrival, I have the space to slow down and enjoy being in the moment. I am excited to continue nurturing my business, expanding my skills, and making a meaningful difference in the lives of those I have the privilege to support.
